Working autonomously in a nurse-led clinic, I assess patients’ health and level of fitness in preparation for their elective surgery. This is done by accurate clinical history taking, recording and interpreting vital signs, blood results and other tests findings. I am identifying patients with anaesthetic concerns/risks and referring them as appropriate to the consultant anaesthetic team/PRIME clinic, with our aim to optimise patients’ health and reduce cancellations on the day of surgery. I am responsible for my own case load of patients, liaising with other healthcare providers to collect information on patients and interpret this information with their test results independently. A large part of this job is preparing patients for surgery. This ranges from medication review and advice, managing expectations of their patient journey for surgery, and giving advice and support on lifestyle changes to optimise their health pre-op. I supported the senior sister in the day-to-day running of the ward and would deputise in her absence. I was involved in audits and service improvement initiatives. As a team leader, I was responsible for the appraisals and performance management of these staff.I was also the ward student liaison. I would work alongside the educational team, ensuring student nurses were provided with induction packs and information prior to their placement. I would allocate the practice supervisors and assessors and support staff in becoming competent in these roles. As a junior sister, I took the role as the bleep holder. This meant I was responsible for the overall staffing and safety for the division. I would support staff with patients’ issues and respond to cardiac arrest and fire calls. Show less

Working as a senior nurse in a fast pace hepatobiliary and upper GI surgical ward. Often taking the role as the in charge nurse coordinating the ward, ensuring patient safety and supporting junior staff. As a mentor I help to teach new learners, including students and new starters. Due to the nature of some of our patients' illnesses, they can deteriorate quickly and are closely monitored. Skills often used in this ward include but are not limited to TPN administration, Chest Drain care, NG tube insertion, PTC drain care and associated patient education, End of Life care, venepuncture and cannulation.
