As a cabin counselor in the lower camp (boys ages 10-12), I provided adequate care and support for each camper and assisted each of them establish and maintain appropriate communications with his bunkmates, camp peers, and with the staff. I also dealt effectively with difficult behaviors from campers by not attacking back, but rather by looking at each camper individually and separating their behaviors from the individual. When necessarily, sought assistance from the ‘Support Integration Team” (SIT), which managed behaviors that involved physical aggression. Used nice, calm, soft approach towards campers, but also stepped it up and put foot down where needed in order to create rapport with campers and to help them establish meaningful relationships and to instill interpersonal skills. Came up with “Bunk Rules” with campers on the first day and had them sign the poster with all the rules so that they were all aware of the rules. Also explained that there will be consequences for breaking any of the rules. Reminded them about the signed poster with rules when a camper was breaking any of them, in order to maintain consistencies with our expectations. Never let my personal problems affect my role as a counselor and stayed in control of my own emotions even when a camper was acting up. Treated each camper with respect and much care in order to provide a loving, comfortable environment away from home.
