Carbon Par is a research project based on recent findings that grass can store carbon, and that managed turf grass can store more carbon than unmanaged grassland. Starting in Iceland, and identifying the unique potential of golf courses as areas of research in this regard, the project first focuses on estimating the carbon status of land used by all golf courses within The Golf Union of Iceland. Some golf course turf is likely to sequester considerable amounts of carbon, while drained wetlands are bound to release CO2 and other greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere. Golf courses can therefore be either carbon positive or negative. Hence the name, Carbon Par. The findings are expected to provide benefits far beyond golf, e.g. sports fields, home lawns, airports, public parks, higway medians, road verges and other urban grass. Show less
