I've known Edwin since his very beginning in high school in Wilton, CT, when I was head of a program in which he was a participant. As a freshman, he brought a very individual style to town and he never changed it. He didn't have to; he always seemed to know what to do. Throughout his four years in high school, he was unwavering in doing his best, whether it was academically, in music or in writing and reciting poetry. He always had time for others and shared his positive outlook on life with both conviction and humor. For Edwin, he did not work in his classes, he studied to gain understanding. He became a well known figure at the high school and in the community and an inspiration to all those who knew him. While I have lost some touch with Edwin, I know that he remains constant, and as his career develops he will continue to inspire those around him.

We are working on characterizing and modeling the spatial-temporal dynamics of innate immune responses triggered by seasonal influenza virus infections as they progress in the human respiratory epithelium, using both primary and established cell line systems. By combining automated epifluorescence microscopy with image processing techniques, we are able extract information about the relative position and infection state of all cells in individual infected wells at different time points. We also stain for antiviral genes, measure infectious particles by plaque assay, and collect supernatants to measure cytokine production. This detailed characterization of virus infection and host immune responses will provide interesting insights about the contribution of different factors to the dynamics of virus replication at the single cell level. At the interface of helminth immunology and gastrointestinal parasitology, I will be focusing on a cestode parasite (tape worm), Taenia solium, to develop and optimize diagnostic assays (both immunological and molecular) for use in the management of the disease (specific drug trials) caused by this parasite in humans, cysticercosis, which leads to neurological disorders. Quantified the seroprevalence of Sin Nombre Virus, a hantavirus, in the population of Peromyscus at Mountain Lake Biological Station in Virginia by running enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays of the blood samples collected over the last three years. The pathological and diagnostic services internship consisted in testing the equipment in the laboratory for calibration and accuracy, qualifying diagnostic images and test results, and automating specimen collection, preparation, and final reporting. Provided support for accurate diagnostic services necessary for appropriate risk assessment and therapeutic monitoring. Field work consisted in checking mouse traps, acquiring morphological measurements, and collecting blood and faecal samples. Lab work included identifying several parasites using a compound microscope and the peromyscus intestinal parasite oocyst identification guide. Afternoons were spent doing lab work, cleaning traps, preparing for the next morning, and processing samples.
