Director of Outreach Services
-
Jun 1984 - Jan 1990
I was hired as Coordinator of School Relations. As the University began to look at recruitment and retention issues in a systematic way I became part of the Enrollment Planning Committee. We instituted a merit scholarship program and began promoting the honors program as a way to encourage Nevada's best and brightest high school graduates and community college transfers to enroll at the University. I created an Outreach Team that included Faculty and Staff so that the University could make more school visits, participate in more college fairs and college nights, and put on more special events. I also oversaw the Student Ambassadors and worked closely with the academic and student services departments. I was promoted from Coordinator of school Relations to Director of Outreach Services. School Counseling Intern
-
Sep 1987 - Jun 1988
While pursuing my Master's degree in Counseling and Educational Pyschology at the University of Nevada, Reno I served my counseling intenship at Reed High School in Sparks, Nevada. I was under the supervision of Reed's Director of Counseling, Susan Rusk. Because of my unique set of skills and experience in college search and selection, counseling and financial aid it was decided that I would serve my internship by keeping the career and counseling center open in the evenings. Students and parents could make appointments or drop in to talk about the college search process, admissions process, financial aid as well as other topics regarding education or training beyond secondary school. While the bulk of the work that I did was in the areas listed above I also dealt with students and parents who were facing other life issues. It was through this internship that I gained experience in both transactional advising (how to do things) as well as transformational advising (how to look at what you are doing now and what you can do in the future to impact your life path). This experience also gave me experience in personal counseling and allowed me to work with the high schools' counseling staff on issues that were impacting students' lives. Show less
