Onsite Social Manager

This position involved organising and planning an activity programme for an English language summer school and managing a team of ALs (Activity Leaders) and build a team ethic to run these activities to their full potential. This included a lot of admin, planning activities and liaising with university hosts to ensure that activities ran smoothly. As this job involved working with children, I also had to complete risk assessments and take safeguarding issues into account. As part of this I had to train staff to implement a safe, informative and fun activity programme, as well as helping to provide my staff with the necessary skills to fulfil the role to the best of their abilities. Throughout this job I had to sensitively manage situations where clients were quite angry and needed to be satisfied within the parameters of the Centre’s budget and modifying the programme to satisfy needs. I was also required to conduct regular observations and appraisals for my staff which meant providing feedback to get the best out of my staff. The position also required me to build and maintain relationships with various service providers such as host contacts and outside contacts such as the DJ company.

Embassy Summer is a programme that enables foreign school students to attend Summer camps to learn and enhance English language skills. During my time at Embassy Summer I was employed as an Activity Leader to run activities for the students when they were not in formal classes. The activities are part of the overall learning programme. I had to lead activities and excursions for foreign children at a summer camp in Oxford. This job required me to think on my feet, communicate clearly and keep to a time schedule. The clear communication was a particularly crucial element of this job, as the children’s first language was not English and, it was important for the children’s enjoyment of the summer camp and their safety on excursions that they could understand what I was saying. Thinking on my feet was a skill I enhanced during this job too as I had to make decisions about what to do with the group when elements of excursions did not go to plan. This job was both enjoyable and enhanced crucial workplace skills.
