  I talk to lots of potential customers who have a wide verity of car problems and service needs which I try and identify and cost out, having many years of workshop knowledge .With modern car this is not an easy job, as all modern cars are linked to computers.   My main concern was not to get injured. We could not avoid the 12 hour shifts, doing a lot of hard manual labour on the rig floor drilling for oil, adding lengths of drilling pipes and changing the multi head Tungsten steel cutting tool which could take 10 to 12 hours of back breaking repetitive work to change. It was exciting work at the time. Now all the offshore drilling rigs are semi automatic with less strain on the drilling crew. In the 1970s health and safety was not a big issue.   I serviced and repaired the wonderful Alfa cars produced in the 1960s and the early 1970s, It was fun and gave me great satisfaction to fine tune the engines and set up the suspensions and steering on the great model range Alfa had in those far off days.
