I worked as a sales rep manager for a weekly student night in Bristol. I led a team of 30 people; my job was to motivate them to be proactive and initiate sales themselves highlighting my leadership credentials. I had to be organised as I liaised with my team about promotion ideas, ticket information and collecting money from them. My selling skills have improved over the last 2 years as initially I was a sales rep. By showing enthusiasm and a willingness to make money, I became one of the best sellers resulting in my promotion. My job then relied on having good people skills to maintain as many sellers as possible and to promote the idea of becoming a seller to new people. This role was key for the long-term success of the night as the recruitment of sellers helped advertise and sell the night. This meant that it was vital the right people were selected, which in turn developed my recruitment eye. Throughout the job, these skills have developed, as well as my business acumen. I helped run a profitable night as a result of key cost-cutting decisions and innovative ideas being made all with the end goal of keeping the night busy and profitable. The whole experience has taught me how important good organisation, good working relations and strong leadership is in the real world.

I worked as a GAP assistant for a year in between school and university. My role was to live full-time on site and be a member of staff, both in the boarding house and in the daytime, working as an assistant in the classroom, on the sports field and in administration. During my time, I demonstrated strong leadership skills by coaching sports teams on my own with some notable achievements including 8/10 match unbeaten seasons in both cricket and football for U-11 teams. This required an ability to come up with both meaningful and fun training drills each week to satisfy both results and the enjoyment of students. What I learnt throughout my experience was that a healthy and fair relationship with both students and parents was key in order for respect to be gained from both parties. I was responsible and organised in many other areas of my role such as being in charge of small groups of students on, for example, field trips and in the classroom where I assisted academically challenged students. My organisational and leadership abilities were also exemplified by my role as a boarding house member of staff. I had to oversee a group of around 60 students 2 nights of the week and once every 6 weeks on the weekend with the help of 2 other members of staff. This role included: assisting in student’s homework, organising schedules for the evenings/weekends and pastoral care. My role in the school also included: extra sports coaching, life guarding, running school events and other general administration. This whole experience showed my ability to overcome new obstacles in the working environment and take on responsibilities that at first seemed daunting but became second nature by the end of the year.
