Had the fantastic opportunity to work with Esther at Global Compact. Under her leadership, Global Compact Network Singapore was able to do so much more to accelerate Sustainability and the UN Ten Principles within the Singapore business landscape. The team rolled out a robust package of platforms that I believe has made an impact. Esther isn’t just a strategic thinker, but is also very much driven with passion and dedication. Her style of management was eye opening for me and was key in building a driven, productive office with creating close-knit bonds that would take us through some difficult times like the pandemic. In her office it was always easy to talk and get guidance, learn from each other, and move together as a team towards a common vision. What stood out for me was that Esther always made it a point to keep a keen eye out on all aspects of the company, and never hesitated to roll up her sleeves and step into the nitty gritty when needed. She’s constantly on the lookout for ways to nurture the team and its individuals and truly has been an inspiration!

I had the pleasure to know Esther through our involvement in the local chapter of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) – the Global Compact Network Singapore (GCNS), which Esther is the Executive Director. Esther places a high importance on encouraging participation and collaboration. Soon after joining GCNS, I was invited to a networking session with other members, together with her and her team. Thereafter, we were invited to take part in the APEX Sustainability Awards, which we subsequently won an award under the category of Sustainable Solutions. This year, I have been privileged to be invited to speak at the in-person event of the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit 2022 in Bangkok, while also receiving an award: the UN SDG Pioneer for Circular Economy. Capability building is another area that Esther is passionate in. This is evident through the various capability enhancement programs such as Foundations in Corporate Sustainability Course and Climate Ambition Accelerator, both of which we have been invited to participate in the inaugural run. Since joining GCNS, I have witnessed Esther strong passion to advance the UNGC10P and UN SDGs in a holistic manner. As someone that values long term relationship and using business to create positive impact, I appreciate the support from Esther and her team, and look forward to many more years of closer partnership and collaboration.

I reported to Esther Chang, Executive Director at Global Compact Network Singapore (GCNS). I am fortunate to have worked in such a passionate, driven, high performing and inclusive environment under her leadership. It was a team that I was very proud to be a part of. GCNS operated mostly from a work-from-home basis and split team office environment during the COVD-19 pandemic era. It was definitely a time of change for the organisational culture. Under Esther’s charge, GCNS not only operated smoothly; the membership grew, and so did its network of partners in industry and government. This is testimony to the value that the organisation, under Esther’s leadership, was able to bring to its stakeholders, even in challenging times. Esther created an open and collaborative team – this was reflected in the systems and processes, which led to greater efficiency, speed and accountability. It was an environment that encouraged inclusive thinking – the culture celebrated diversity and we felt safe in sharing our unique perspectives. Discussions and brainstorming sessions were always open, respectful, and exploratory. It was a culture that demanded accountability and ownership – she always pushed for critical thinking and practicality. I truly appreciated the critical and constructive feedback I had received from Esther throughout my time there. Last but not least, she made conscientious effort to recognise the team’s hard work regularly, especially during peak periods. She continually sought to instill pride in everything we did, and we felt our work made a difference to our members. I am grateful for the investment she had put into her team and for empowering us to continually strive to do better.
