The Stork is an online newspaper created by IE students which aims to give a platform for students to voice their views on academic and global issues. As the editor for opinion I manage a team of writers helping guide the direction, diction and structure of the articles they write; My goal is to help my writers voice their views in the most effective way possible. As a writer I have primarily focused on an analysis of global contemporary issues, seeking to give an interdisciplinary approach to modern matters. As a member of the management board of The Stork I collaborate with my fellow managers to ensure that the newspaper is consistent with its direction and stylistic prefferences. Working as a part of this newspaper has imbued me with notable hard (writing, public speaking and time management) and soft skills (Team management, communication and critical thinking) that carry on into every aspect of my life.

Through a collaboration with "the Guardian" sponsored project" Team Populism" and my University for a period of 4 months I worked with a group of students from my university on the analysis of discourse practices of world leaders. My focus was on the analysis of the candidates of the 2008 Mexican presidential elections and the 3 former presidents of Honduras. The project involved reading the speeches and determining how populist the discourse of each political figure is; The analysis was done in the scope of guidelines provided by the representative of the partner university of this project professor Kirk Hawkins of Brigham Young University. Upon reading and evaluating the speeches we assigned a value (0 to 2) to quantify the level of populist discourse of each leader such that these values could be used to create a statistical and graphical representation of populist discourse throughout the years. The study sought to understand how populist discourse practices have evolved over time and how they have shaped the current political climate.

As a part of a collaboration with IE University (via an opportunity called the Policy lab) I had the opportunity to work with the Spanish NGO porCausa to help create a Capstone report outlining ‘best practice’ migration policies in Latin America. Our team was tasked with creating individual country reports on how the contemporary shifts in immigration flows in South America have prompted changes in policy; The reports we created sought to highlight the policy choices which helped migrants attain a more equitable transition into host countries. Personally I analyzed the shifting dynamics in Chilean policy making, taking into account the international legal framework Chile exists within, paired with the political situation of the South American continent as a whole. Learning about the human impact of policy choices has only furthered my passion to engage with the realm of international policy making, in hopes that we can move closer towards a more equitable international framework.
