•As part of my second-year social care course, I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to work alongside some of the most professional staff in the area of equine therapy.•This involved working in a day service for people with intellectual disabilities and guiding them in their learning. This also allowed me to experience many different trips with the adults around Dublin and Wicklow.•I was also part of equine assisted therapy classes and groups with children with varying disabilities. This would often include equine assisted learning classes before or after the lessons.•After my placement experience in Festina Lente, I was kept on as a staff member on the day service team, this experience allowed me to further my learning as I planned days out and guided classes and lessons with the adults both on the yard with the animals and out in the community. It also allowed me to work with adults as they furthered their skills and knowledge in so many aspects.
