As the long-time coordinator of the American Turkish Society’s annual gala I’ve had the opportunity to work with a number of the organization’s executive directors. 3 years ago, when Janset Batibay became ATS’s new executive director in the middle of the frenetic gala planning she was new to the world of a small not-for-profit where everyone wears many hats. I was concerned she would be overwhelmed by the challenges that faced her. Janset proved to be a wonderful influence on ATS. She was upbeat and enthusiastic. She was willing to learn and embrace the systems that had made the organization successful in the past and to bring new ideas to expand programs and generate new enthusiasm and to bring in new staff, partners and support. The roll of an ATS executive director is challenging. Janset has to be a strong leader and manager but also be willing to act as a conduit for ideas and procedures that are presented by members of the board of directors. The job takes a true team player who knows how to keep programs on track while building and developing complicated relationships. Janset handles all these challenges with grace. Janset is one in a million ! She is a born leader. I have worked with Janset in the YSL. We have seen ATS and YSL continue to expand with her. She understands what can and can not be done. She is a cutting edge personality, a great executive director.

My mandate is to oversee strategic and daily operations- including cultural programming- as well as administrative and financial functions. For strategic operations, it is my responsibility to set the strategic direction for the organization. I also develop, maintain, and support a strong board of directors; serve as ex-officio of each committee and cultivate board involvement in ongoing operations and future expansion. Some of my key contributions to the organization so far have been: • Orchestrating all aspects of the organization’s signature annual cultural event: The New York Turkish Film Festival (budget $50K) from sponsorship and vendors to programming, marketing, and special events for invited talent. • Overseeing event operations (concept, strategy, honoree and committee relations, fundraising, communications, public relations, and more) for 20 events per year, including the annual gala (budget $150K).
