  Lab Technician in the McSorley Lab. McSorley Lab's focus is researching T cell memory in the context of bacterial infections. Specifically, the lab studies CD4 T cell responses to Salmonella and Chlamydia. The lab aims to understand how memory T cells are generated in the context of these infections with the hopes of creating a future vaccine.As a Lab Technician, my responsibilities include: carrying out tasks for the principle investigator, maintaining a neat and thorough lab notebook with important lab information for the principle investigator, facilitating various assays for the graduate students, ordering and maintaining lab supplies and equipment, refinement of laboratory protocols, and maintenance of laboratory reagents.

  I volunteered in the Solnick Lab where I did research on the gut bacterium Helicobacter pylori. The gastric pathogen colonizes roughly 50% of the worlds population, with the majority of infections occurring in third-world countries. Infection of the pathogen causes chronic inflammation in the gut; significantly increasing the risk of gastric ulcers and gastric cancer. Dr. Solnick's research aimed at understanding the pathogenicity of the bacterium in hopes of creating a future vaccine.

  Paul Hom Asian Clinic is a non-profit organization committed to serving underserved and uninsured Asian populations in a linguistically and culturally sensitive manner. The success of the clinic is a result of undergraduate patient advocates, health professional students, and physicians who work together.The role of the Patient Advocate was very similar to that of a Medical Scribe. The responsibilities included: registering the patients into the system in the morning, taking patients vitals, filling out paperwork required for the patient to receive care, reviewing current lab results and informing the patient of the doctors instructions, checking if patients needed prescription refills and then consulting a doctor, taking notes for the doctor during a doctor-patient consultation, filling out blood draw lab forms for the doctor, and reiterating the doctors orders to the patient before they left the clinic.
