      • Having volunteered every Wednesday from May to September, I was offered a job for the weekends and college holidays as a zookeeper at the park.• I work with all of the over 30 species present in the park, however I work predominantly with the primates and small carnivores. • Daily tasks include preparing animal’s meals, ensure animal’s housing and exhibits are clean and are suitable for the animals, carefully monitor animal health and take note of any behavioural changes or injuries, administer medications if necessary.• I have given an array of environmental enrichments to a multitude of species to prevent stereotypes, increase feeding time and encourage natural behaviours. • I have basic animal training experience. • I am responsible for all keeper talks and animal handling on days I am working, these included talks on meerkats, otters, and capuchins as well as public handling of reptiles and invertebrates. Doing these talks and animal handling encounters are one of my favourite aspects of my role, I thoroughly enjoy interacting with the public and engaging them in the animals kept in the park.• I have taught several leaving cert and transition year students ecology on their field trips to the park and ensured the information was presented in an engaging and memorable way.• The park runs several different experiences for the public these include junior keeper, senior keeper, and a meerkat experience. I have organised and have been responsible for the entire duration of many of these experiences. Recently, a capybara experience was developed, and I was made responsible for the running of the first one of these which went very successfully. In all of these experiences I have ensured the maximum amount of safety for the participant and the animals as well as ensuring the visitor has a rewarding time.• I have featured presenting our animals on the park’s social media pages.• Basic knowledge of ZIMS. I worked as a volunteer zookeeper every Wednesday throughout the summer in Secret Valley wildlife park. I had fantastic hands on experience with a wide variety of animals at the park ranging from but not limited to lemurs, capuchin monkeys, corsac fox, Asian short clawed otters, meerkats, snakes, and raccoons amongst around 30 more species. My tasks included animal food preparation, exhibit cleaning, general animal care and interacting with the public and answering any questions they may have had. Show less

I completed a 6 week work placement module for 4th year in Baobab Wildlife Conservation and Research centre in the Limpopo province of South Africa. I was part of a wildlife monitoring unit focused on white and black rhinos but also studied populations of leopard, brown hyena, elephant, pangolin and others. I was part of two dehorning events where over 10 white rhino were dehorned in order to protect them from poaching. A habitat study was also commenced during my time on the reserve. We aimed to catalogue the grass species and abundances across 36 sites on the 55,000 acre reserve. Twice weekly, camera traps were set up in different locations. These are pivotal in understanding the species present on the reserve and their habitat usage and population size. Show less

From the ages of 16 to 20 I worked in the Farmer’s Kitchen hotel in Wexford. I mostly worked as a waiter in the restaurant but I have also worked in the hotel’s gourmet food van, as a night porter, as a kitchen porter and behind the bar. I developed great public relation skills over my time in the hotel. From the ages of 16 to 20 I worked in the Farmer’s Kitchen hotel in Wexford. I did a week of work experience in Fota wildlife park as part of my transition year in secondary school. I got a fantastic glimpse at zoo life. A particular highlight was helping in the carnivore department with the Asiatic lions, Sumatran tigers and Northern cheetah.
