Tracy Flood, MD, PhD

I met Dustin during an interesting time: In the midst of a pandemic. Dustin was an Emergency Data Relief Intern on The COVID-19 Data Project an initiative by BroadStreet. The COVID-19 Data Project is a fully remote team of over 400 interns. With such a big team, it takes a special person to stand out. Dustin has definitely stood out. To this day, Dustin is amongst one of the favorite interns with whom I have had the pleasure of working. He has always been a joy to work with and has showed a level of tenacity and reliability that makes me believe he will soon be leader in the field of epidemiological research. I can personally attest to Dustin’s excellent qualifications for this program. Dustin is: • Passionate about infectious disease, food security, and how epidemiology can inform and transform the health of communities around the world. Dustin has worked globally, volunteering in villages in Thailand. He saw firsthand how local conditions impact community health and how access to resources can contribute to risk factors such as poor nutrition and the spread of infectious disease. As his passion grew, he pursued an MPH at New York University while maintaining a home base in Thailand during the pandemic. • Skilled in teamwork and communication on a global team. Dustin is an excellent communicator with a naturally compassionate and clear communication style that has the potential to unite teams across international borders. Every day and week, we could rely on Dustin to communicate effectively and to deliver on goals while working on a remote, global team. Dustin is and has always been an outstanding contributor. • Experienced with large and complex real-world datasets. During his time on the project, Dustin was part of a data team compiling a crowd-sourced, longitudinal dataset that updated daily. He managed that ever-changing database with ease and was a steadfast team member with the personal integrity to ensure high quality data. • Naturally skilled at research. Dustin an interested and avid learner in research techniques. He is always willing to learn. He seeks and takes feedback incredibly well, which makes him a joy to work with. He loves exploring the unknown and his sense of wonder about discovering new things is deeply engaging. • Organized and reliable. During a pandemic, there is a lot of uncertainty. Dustin had the integrity to volunteer towards a greater cause during this time and proved to be a dedicated and reliable team member even as global travel restrictions and university campus closures were creating challenges on a personal level. He never waivered. Dustin has the organizational skillset needed to deliver in a remote work environment. Managing work-related responsibilities and being a trustworthy team member during the global unrest created by COVID-19, is certainly a tremendous accomplishment. Dustin has excelled beyond his peers. It is a great combination of skills when a person is dedicated to public health a
