Responsibilities included: preparing and distributing construction updates, writing social media copy, coordinating community meetings and engaging local communities through in-person and virtual events while minimizing construction impacts and resolving construction related issues for stakeholders. The goal of my work was to amplify community voices throughout the construction process. With the guidance of Senior Project Managers, I've applied project management fundamentals as a Deputy Project Manager by executing deliverables at each phase of a project life cycle. For example, in order to plan, implement, and facilitate community engagement activities - I had to implement project management fundamentals such as scheduling periodic check in meetings with internal team members to deliver tasks in a timely manner, organizing event logistics, delegating administrative tasks as needed, monitoring qualitative and quantitative data collected from engagement activities, and finally reporting the data collected by preparing comprehensive engagement summaries for review for various public agencies. Culminated my research project by presenting at Oxford College's annual Research Scholars Symposium on April 21st, 2017. Background For the first time in history, the plight of the Oromo people has received worldwide attention due to increased access to social media among native Oromo youth, diasporic Oromo youth as well as older generations of the diasporic Oromo community at large. International media outlets have reported on the peaceful protests and subsequent government repression. Ethiopia has been facilitating the colonial terrorism and genocide of the Oromo since the last decades of the 19th century that is still continuing with the support of global powers in the West. The Oromo are the single largest ethno-national group in northeast Africa. In fact, Oromia is often referred to as the “breadbasket” of the region because 60% of Ethiopian economic resources are generated from Oromia. Although Oromia generates the majority of Ethiopia's economic resources, the Oromo people are economically marginalized and receive little to no compensation for their labor. In addition to being economically marginalized, they are socially and politically marginalized.
