The dominant standard for transmitting and distributing power is the alternating current (ac) power system, rather than the direct current (dc) system. However, despite the fact that present ac power systems are highly complex and inherently nonlinear, harmonic control and power factor compensation are most often developed and studied using linear signal-based approaches or ad-hoc definitions of powers. Therefore, my research goal was to construct a mathematical framework; it was based on the property of energy balancing and power flow between the various subsystems, since energy and power concepts do not depend on the form of the signals nor is it restricted to linear elements or systems, in contrast to the classical signal processing approaches. Therefore, this framework was based on the dissipative systems theory, which relates to Lyapunov and L2 stability, and was used to harmonic control and power factor compensation of nonlinear power systems.
