Duncan was one of the founding Directors of Aquaterra Consulting in June 1998 with corporate management, operations and technical (hydrogeology) roles. Duncan took the CEO role in 2004 with responsibiity for commercial management, organisational structure, funding and in coordinating the strategic direction of the business and ownership-succession planning. Aquaterra grew from seven Perth based staff to ~100 professional staff throughout Australia, UK, Mongolia with international projects in Africa and the Middle East. In 2010 Duncan was instrumental in negotiating the succesful sale of Aquaterra to the RPS Group PLC (where he became Managing Director of RPS-Aquaterra). Duncan was also involved with both technical and management roles on mining, construction and public-sector projects for water supply, dewatering and water management. During this time, he played a lead technical role on some of the most challenging mining projects developed in WA.

Duncan was manager of the water resources group in Perth with responsibility for group revenue and profitability, and operational management; the group comprised ten professional staff. Duncan also had project/technical responsibilities as the Senior Hydrogeologist and Project Manager for a range of predominantly mining-related projects, taking responsibility for both technical and commercial outcomes. He managed detailed dewatering assessment and design for many of the major iron ore expansion projects in the Pilbara (West Angelas - Robe River, Hope Downs - Hancock and MAC/Yandi - BHPIO). He was involved with project and contractor management, supervision and data assessment/interpretation and reporting, managing project budgets of up to A$1,000,000.

Duncan undertook/supervised hydrogeological work in the firm's Oman office and managed the day to day operation of the water resources section. Responsible for the technical and financial preparation of proposals and for the planning, implementation and control of projects involving multi-disciplinary consultant teams, geophysical contractors and drilling contractors and the deployment of up to three assistant staff. Provided services to the government, oil and gas and mining industries. While working in this multi-sector multi cultural environment interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity become important skills. Projects included: • Catchment and groundwater management - with particular emphasis on feasibility studies for artifcial recharge dams • Strategic Water Resources Planning studies • Water Supply Development including groundwater exploration, supervising drilling and geophysical investigations and the determination of sustainable yields and operational recommendations. • Mine Water Management for Oman Mining Company's copper and gold operations at Sohar and Rakah.
