While at LGC I worked as a Forensic Analyst, examining and analysing substances. This included using a variety of analytical techniques including TLC, FTIR and GC-MS. Each case required me to create a witness statement that could be used for prosecution purposes. Every day involved project management to organise priorities and plan my workload. An important part of the job was handling customer expectations and reporting work, and also providing additional scientific expertise when needed. After 6 months I started to report cases under my own name, and underwent court training to prepare me in case I was called to court to give scientific evidence. After two years I was promoted to Forensic Practitioner, increasing my responsibility in the team. I took on more advanced casework and was involved in more unusual cases. I was also responsible for training a new member of staff. Shortly after I took on responsibility of producing and handling data for substance seizures, and presenting the data so that it could be used in other scientists' witness statements. Show less
