In this role, I curate, design, and write educational content for the clinic's web portal. My goal is to not only explain the services provided in the clinic but also help those we assist, primarily underserved populations, in understanding and using the various preventative and restorative services available in dentistry. Also, I had the opportunity to collaboratively work with a local church, organizing and speaking at outreach programs organized for refugees to help them understand the importance of oral health and its relation to general health. I am also surveying transportation barriers to help the organization know more about our patients' concerns and find solutions to motivate them for regular dental visits. Additionally, I assist multiple highly skilled dentists. Every time I do so, I acquire new skills that will help me in my career, providing patients with high-quality dental care. I'm getting more fascinated by learning about cutting-edge dentistry as I go through training for new methods like CAD/CAM and Dentrix software. I also work hard to comfort patients in stressful times by conversing with them and enjoy making our presence impactful during their time in the clinic. All these experiences are giving me first-hand knowledge of health disparities, social justice concerns, and various facets of dental care that influence equity in health care. Show less

I prepare patients for their dental treatment by setting up an operatory and seating and comforting them prior to getting treatment. I ensure all the instruments and materials, including digital radiographs, are available for the dentists. I often sterilize instruments, disinfect communal space, arrange instrument trays, and also guide pre-dental students on related aspects. I provide chairside assistance to multiple highly experienced dentists during dental emergencies, examinations, and a wide range of procedures. Through my role, I learned the importance of HIPAA regulations to ensure patient confidentiality. Specifically, while assisting a number of volunteer dentists at Emergency Night Clinic, I feel challenged and use my leadership, critical thinking, and communication abilities to assure anxious patients who might be in terrifying pain and work with the team to create a safe environment for everyone in the clinic. Additionally, with the mission of educating patients in a simple yet effective way, I designed and created the following educational materials- 1. A three-dimensional model depicting root canal treatment using leftovers available in the clinic and my home. 2. A three-dimensional model of a three-unit bridge prosthesis with materials no longer useful in the clinic. 3. Brochures related to different dental related topics. 4. A survey to understand the better ways of serving people on controlled substances. My interactions with highly skilled dentists and staff, and pre-dental students while volunteering here have markedly enhanced me on both personal and professional levels. I regard this growth as crucial in my life to reach my goal of serving underprivileged populations with high professional dental standards. Show less

Over the course of three years here, I was able to provide a full range of dental services to underserved people who were in dire need of essential dental care. I examined, diagnosed, and treated pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients. Due to the irrational habits of people here, I encountered various unpredictable emergencies, including a child with a safety pin stuck in her molar tooth. All of these situations tested and strengthened not only my dental knowledge and skills but also my abilities to educate people on sound scientific and cultural grounds. I collaborated with Lion's Club International and local schools to create awareness in people about the effects of practicing irrational habits, especially the effects of chewing Arecanut frequently, which leads to a precancerous oral condition, Oral Submucous Fibrosis(OSMF). In addition, I performed the following in my role as a general dentist: Coordinated dental office; trained and supervised clinical staff, including dental assistants and a pharmacist. Performed periodontal treatments like full mouth debridement, prophylaxis, periodic screening for gingival health, and educated on oral hygiene maintenance practices. Performed restorative procedures like amalgam, glass ionomer cement, and composite restorations for all six classes of cavity designs. Performed endodontic procedures for infected and/or traumatized anterior and premolar teeth. Performed pulpotomies, pulpectomies, extractions, and restorative techniques, including miracle mix restoration in pediatric patients. Performed procedures like simple and surgical extractions of erupted teeth, alveoloplasty, and operculectomy. Treated patients suffering from OSMF and diagnosed various oral conditions that could be lethal to the patient's health. Performed various prosthodontic procedures like crowns, bridges, complete and partial dentures of various techniques, including three-visit complete dentures. Show less

As an intern, I acquired a wide range of practical experience through direct exposure to a large number of diverse populations. My experiences during such an intensive program laid a foundation and gave me the confidence and strength to begin my career in Channagiri, an isolated place with sparse health facilities, and to help underprivileged people there. My typical responsibilities included were- 1. Examined and provided various services to people under the guidance of supportive faculty during rotations through nine different dental specialty departments. After graduating, I was able to provide essential quality dental services and encounter emergency conditions due to the knowledge and skills I have been well-trained throughout these rotations. 2. Participated in projects specific to these specialty departments. For example, my team of four created a three-dimensional model of a primary healthcare center and a video explaining different methods of child management in both English and Kannada. Through these projects, I learned crucial lifelong skills such as effective teamwork, dynamic leadership, and improved ways of educating people. 3. Participated in numerous free community outreach initiatives that educated and assisted elderly adult and pediatric patients. My motivation to help the less fortunate has been strengthened by my experiences providing dental care to marginalized persons while volunteering for these initiatives. 4. Conducted a survey on prevalent issues in dentistry, such as "public perception about dental camps." It helped the college predict the people's demands during dental camps and gave me first-hand experience understanding the appropriate public needs. Overall, I learned significant lessons from my mistakes, the feedback of everyone around me, and the tremendous support I received from the faculty. Show less
