Involved in the clinical teaching of postgraduates one afternoon a week. I enjoyed taking an active part in both diagnosis of patients as well as their management throughout treatment. I was active in arranging an exchange program between the students of Guys hospital, London and the students of the People’s ninth hospital in Shanghai, China. I felt that this was interesting from both the cultural aspect as well as the educational exchange of information. We successfully exchanged students in the summer of 2005 and 2007.

Senior Registrar/FTTA in Orthodontics
-
Jan 2002 - Jan 2004
Clinical: This job involved the care of patients across two sites. I undertook treatment sessions of patients in IOTN category 4 and 5 and patients requiring a combination of orthodontics and orthognathic surgery to correct their malocclusions. I took part in one/two joint clinics per week with both Oral surgery colleagues and plastic surgeons. I also took part on new patient clinics one session per week.Teaching: The job involved supervision of postgraduates and examination of cases in preparation for exams. I have given a lecture entitled “orthodontic management of the traumatized incisor” as a joint presentation with the paedodontic registrar for general dental practitioners as a section 63 course. I have enjoyed taking part in a three day “Lightwire pre-programmed progressive edgewise” course and lectured on the subject of bonding, banding and canine retraction to General Dental Practitioners. Research:I identified a research project looking at the process of informed consent and how this can be improved. I carried out a prospective randomized controlled trial comparing two different methods of consenting process. The aim was to determine whether the use of interactive multimedia improved patient understanding of their treatment and hence become a more effective means of achieving informed consent. This was supported by the St Georges’ Charitable Trust Foundation.Audit:I have completed an audit project looking at breakages of Orthodontic retainers. The result from this is that patients will now be charged for replacement retainers and a new audit is being carried out to determine if this reduces the incidence of breakages. I have supervised two postgraduate audits: one examining the quality of lateral cephalograms as well as an audit examining attendance failure. Both have been published in the Royal College of surgeons audit newsletter.

During this post I treated high priority patients (IOTN 3, 4 and 5). I was also involved in the treatment planning of such cases together with the consultant. A large proportion of patients required input from the paedodontic, restorative and oral and maxillofacial teams for comprehensive whole patient care. Clinical:Practical experience was gained from the treatment of a large caseload of patients presenting with a wide range of malocclusions. I was supervised by two consultants and two specialist practitioners. The main fixed appliance used was the preadjusted edgewise appliance and a smaller number of patients were treated with the tip edge appliance. The main functional appliances used were the twin block appliances but I also had experience fitting Bionators, the Teuscher appliance and the Function Regulator III appliance. I used removable appliances as single treatment modalities and in combination with fixed and functional appliances.Combined clinics:Attended monthly orthognathic/orthodontic consultant clinics with Mr P. Haers, Oral and Maxillofacial consultant, Royal Surrey County Hospital and North Hampshire Hospital, and Mrs S. Power. I successfully completed the orthodontic treatment of five orthognathic cases. I also carried out orthodontic treatment of three further cases.Academic:Tuition in aspects of orthodontics took place at Guy’s Hospital. This included the basic theory of orthodontic treatment and the importance of growth and development. The biology of tooth movement and methods of research as well as statistical analyses was taught. Interelated subjects including oral surgery, periodontology, restorative dentistry and paedodontics was also studied.Research:The Master of Science degree by research was a prospective randomized controlled trial undertaken at the North Hampshire Hospital. The study investigated the effects of scar tissue contraction on tooth migration following the extraction of first premolars in class II division 1 malocclusion. The project was supervised by Professor Stephens at the Bristol Dental Hospital. I secured funding for the project for the British Dental Association.Audit:I attended regular departmental audit meetings at the North Hampshire Hospital.
