As Chair of the Department of Technical Communication and Interactive Design, my work focuses on the strategic management and growth of an academic unit within a college. Chairs, sometimes referred to as Department Heads, supervise faculty and administrative staff, oversee departmental budgets, and engage in both short- and long-range planning in a variety of operational areas. I spent many years working in technical communication. However, early on, I knew I wanted to do more for the field. First, I wanted to understand the seeming differences between academics and practitioners to determine where our true intersections exist. Second, I wanted to teach! Technical communication became a true passion for me and an excellent career; there was no reason not to pass along what I knew to others. Ultimately, I graduated from Texas Tech University in 2008 with a PhD, and here I am today—a faculty member and department administrator for the Department of Technical Communication and Interactive Design (TCID) at Kennesaw State University. In my teaching, my current interests focus on new directions for the field. For the last several years, I've been introducing undergraduate TCOM and IAD majors to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Analytics via TCOM 3245. In this class, students use their personal websites for implementation. Each week, we examine a topic related to improving SEO and then try it out. We also deploy Google Analytics as a way to observe and measure the iterative changes to sites.
