Maintaining and rebuilding special pneumatic drills, which are used to drill the thousands of rivet holes in air plane wings. Myself and my teammate improved the drilling system dramatically by correcting C.F.M. as well as other variables effecting cutting speed. With exposure to hydro forming, large stamping, laser cutting and automated welding assemblies I was able to gain a wide range of skills. It was here I perfected welding hard steels (D2,A2 etc.) with over one hundred stamping dies there was no shortage of weld repair to be done. I was fortunate that when I started at HFS I worked with only one other toolmaker on midnights. We were responsible for the 200,000sq.ft. Plant and all that went on between 11pm and 7am. My ambition was not unnoticed, my journeyman gave me what he called "enough rope to hang myself." It was here I took advantage of the opportunity to weld and grind and make adjustments to fixtures. I took educated chances and learned through this period how to persist through though problems and stressful deadlines. That was enough to garner the attention of the tool room manager. After switching to days for the 2nd and 3rd year of my apprenticeship, he would come to tell me he considered me a toolmaker already. He would send me on press calls and bring me the most urgent work because he knew that I hustle. Time is money and when the clocks on me.... I move!
