The lack of diabetes education is a serious problem in New Brunswick caused by disparities in access to health care and the English-Spanish language barrier. With support and funding from Rutgers ODASIS and Clinton Foundation (CGI), my friend and I set up a program to teach high school students about diabetes who will then go out into the community and educate city residents through plays/fotonovellas. Ten Latino students were selected based on interest in the health field and underwent a 9-week course. Each week focused on a different topic from nutrition to cultural sensitivity. Dr. Guarnaccia came in one week to discuss his diabetes research while an EMT talked about diabetes first aid. Show less

      • May 2016 - May 2018

I taught statistics for research to over 100 ODASIS students which reinforced my ability to communicate clearly, logically and creatively. Working with such a diverse group from all backgrounds and walks of life motivated me to learn about different learning styles (visual, auditory, tactile, etc.) which proved extremely relevant to our topics. Discovering that I am a visual learner, I often brought in my data and demonstrated how I use statistical methods. I loved seeing their faces as they finally mastered a concept. Tutoring allowed me the opportunity to develop intellectually, psychologically and personally, and ultimately, I feel more comfortable about working in a professional setting. Show less

      • Jan 2015 - Aug 2017

Performed a variety of molecular biochemical techniques using PCR, gel electrophoresis, gel purification, Gibson Assembly, transforming, mini-prepping, etc. My first project in the Grant lab was to identify the molecular pathway of RAB-10, which is involved in endocytosis, for instance, in the reuse of glucose transporters (GLUT4) to control blood sugar levels in diabetes. Thus, I spent my next two years studying endocytosis in context of the transparent nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans. My work led to the oral defense for my departmental honors thesis, in which I analyzed the effect of GCK-2, a MAP4 kinase that acts after RAB-10 to also regulate recycling. In the end, by performing various experiments and analyzing the results, we concluded that gck-2 has a negative effect on rab-10. Show less

I shadowed a Dr. Nathan, pediatrician & allergist, in his clinic that serves patients in Paterson, NJ. Dr. Nathan's clinical decisions were based on each patient's situation. Can this family afford to take a medication three times a day instead of once daily? What is the level of the child's tolerance? Can an asthmatic child sit for the nebulizer treatment or should he just use an inhaler? I learned how important it is to consider questions like these and to use the answers to create personalized treatment plans. Show less
