Andy was based within the Environment Group at Arcadis in Warrington. He was responsible for the management of various environmental feasibility and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) projects within the power transmission and highways sector. Power projects included a number of wind generation and cable / OHL connections for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects, whilst the highways experience includes a number of NSIPs in the north west of England. The role requires working closely with a variety of technical experts, including: Ecologists, Landscape Architects, Noise Experts, Archaeologist, Contaminated Land Specialists, Air Quality Assessors, and others. Working with, and coordinating this large range of experts provides Andy with an excellent understanding of these wider environmental disciplines, and an in depth understanding of the wider environmental, social and economic impacts of large scale engineering projects. Andy worked in the Energy Development & Consents Team, within the Environment Group at Parsons Brinckerhoff in Manchester. He was responsible for the management of various feasibility and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) projects for the power generation industry in the UK and overseas. Projects included Wind, Biomass, and Gas Fired power generation, including the management of environmental statements for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NCIP), to support Development Consent Orders (DCO). Andy also managed international projects, including an ESIA for gas / oil fired plant in Ghana. The role required working closely with a variety of other technical experts, including: Ecologists, Landscape Architects, Noise Experts, Archaeologist, Contaminated Land Specialists, Air Quality Assessors, and others. Working with, and coordinating this large range of experts gave Andy an excellent understanding of these wider environmental disciplines, and an in depth understanding of the wider environmental, social and economic impacts of large scale engineering projects. Notable projects include the Progress Power DCO (granted 2014) for which Andy was project manager for all environmental and engineering works from scoping through DCO examination. Andy also managed the Amandi Energy Power Plant ESIA in Ghana. Of note was the requirement to travel to Ghana to present the project to local organisations and international finance representatives. Andy's time at Royal Haskoning was primarily spent managing a range of flood defence projects around the UK. These included the preparation of flood risk assessments, feasibility studies, project appraisal reports, catchment wide strategic reviews, post flood assessments, and the outline / detailed design of flood defences. Notable projects included the management of the Wigton Flood Alleviation Scheme, a 2 year project which incorporated all stages from feasibility, project appraisal, outline and detail design. Construction of the defence was completed in early 2012. Andy was also involved in during and post flood surveys undertaken throughout the September 2009 Cumbria floods. This involved working on site during the event, utilising my understanding of fluvial systems, processes, and hydrology to identify and assess the processes that led to flooding in particular areas. This information could then be used in the design of future flood defences. Skills used on a regular basis whilst in this role included; project management, hydrology (FEH), hydraulic modelling (Isis, HEC-RAS Tuflow), economic analysis, fluvial geomorphology, contaminated land, and topographic surveys among others.
