I am a 2011 graduate of Olivet College and a former undergraduate advisee of Dr. Susanne Lewis. I am currently attending Des Moines University to obtain a Masters of Science in Anatomy. I am writing a letter on behalf of Dr. Susanne Lewis because during my time at Olivet College she was an instrumental part of my success. Dr. Lewis challenged me; she taught me to look for different ways to solve academic problems and was the first person I turned to on campus whenever I needed advice. I began at Olivet College in the fall of 2009 one of my first classes was organic chemistry. Dr. Susanne Lewis taught this class using a guided learning program, POGIL. I had taken a semester of organic chemistry via normal lecture and I know that I gained a more thorough understanding through the POGIL learning system. After taking my MCAT exam I was very thankful that Dr. Lewis took the time and effort to make POGIL work at Olivet College. She knows that this system is effective and allows students to gain not only a better understanding of organic chemistry, but also a new perspective on how to look at any problem and break it down to gain a plausible answer. This is a lesson that I have been able to carry with me to graduate school and is helping me to be successful at a higher level of academia. Dr. Susanne Lewis is passionate about helping her students succeed, not only academically, but also professionally. She showed me how in undergrad I could begin looking for opportunities to network with graduate schools in my field of interest. I attended two National American Chemistry Society meetings with Dr. Lewis and other Olivet College students. Each time I attended the conference I gained new communication skills that served me well in my graduate school interviews and I know will aid me later on in my career. Dr. Lewis is a dedicated and passionate educator. She has gone above and beyond for myself throughout my undergraduate career, and even as a graduate student she has given me a great sense of support and encouragement. She challenges her students to become the best they can be in their chosen field. Dr. Susanne Lewis would be an asset on any campus, but I am thankful she has chosen Olivet College.
