“Design and development of reactor for biomass based hydrochar production using hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process”. The salient findings of the research were:1. First ever in the country, an indigenous low cost, energy efficient, simple in design, lab-scale hydrothermal carbonization reactor (1 L) was fabricated with locally available materials to produce hydrochars and tested for alternate solid fuel, adsorbent and soil amendment applications.2. Promising and highly carbonaceous (>35%) biomass materials were selected to produce hydrochars at 180-220°C for 3-12 h. Hydrochars were tested as per coal standards which exhibited closer fuel properties of lignite with the calorific value of 25.75 MJ kg-1 than lignite (16.3 MJ kg-1). Since hydrochars had negligible amount of Nitrogen (%) and Sulphur (%), it would produce less NOx and SOx emissions it is combusted. Hydrochars had heavy metals removal efficiency of Pb2+ (95.08%), Zn2+ (90.72%), Cr6+ (23.65%) at 25 mg L-1 and Ni2+ (68.44%) at 50 mg L-1.

“Development of mathematical model for solar radiation data”- Undergone internship training programme at NIWE, Chennai - My objective was to analyze the complex set of solar radiation data to develop “Solar Atlas”. I developed a set of regression model to define the relationships between variables. Global and direct normal radiation was found to be strongly correlated (r - 0.870) where as direct normal and diffuse radiation was found to be weakly correlated (r - 0.501). This work was well received by the institution and peers as this was a new technology. Furthermore, this project offered me a chance to improve my communication and team skills.
