Research area: Proactive Change Management Title of research work: A Framework for Modeling Changes in Construction Projects. Summary: Early change identification and impact prediction is a crucial challenge of change management. Detecting changes early and identifying the least impact change alternative can minimize time and cost overruns of the project. Summary: Early change identification and impact prediction is a crucial challenge of change management. Detecting changes early and identifying the least impact change alternative can minimize time and cost overruns of the project. An exploratory case study is conducted in 19 different projects, and 3959 changes were analyzed to understand the existing practice, decision making process flow, and change causes and effects. A change cause-effect framework with three levels has been proposed. The exploratory case study revealed that accuracy of prediction can be increased if the changes are modeled within and across multiple entity types such as teams, components, deliverables, activities, and parameters in an integrated manner. To develop a solution to this problem, an in-depth case study was conducted across three projects: underground metro, hospital, and residential building. With the case study findings and an exhaustive literature review, a matrix framework was developed based on two approaches - Axiomatic Design (AD) and Multiple Domain Matrix (MDM). AD principles were used to model functional requirements and parameters (design and construction) for early change identification. MDM approach was utilized to model multiple entity types relationships for predicting change propagation impacts. Based on industry feedback, the research can be claimed that the proposed framework is generic and it is applicable to any type of construction project.
