    • Director of Cross-Curricular Learning
      • Sep 2012 - Present

My role as Director of Cross-Curricular Learning was created in September 2012 to enhance the synergies beyond and between curriculum subjects. Encompassing the coordination and development of best practice, I have responsibility for curriculum enrichment at St Albans School, with a particular focus on Sixth Form, alongside my role as classroom Physics teacher.Lower down the School, we offer Year 10-11 students the chance to research and write a dissertation and gain a GCSE Higher Project Qualification. I deliver the taught element via on-line and face-to-face sessions, oversee individual mentoring and am an experienced mentor. For Lower Sixth students, I coordinate a diverse programme of short enrichment courses of Ethical Questions, Critical Thinking, and Skills, after which all students embark on an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), for which I am Director, having acted as personal mentor for many years. We encourage students to consider alternative routes to their Project, such as a performance/lecture or creation of an artefact. I enjoy the opportunity to act as roving consultant to a strong team of dedicated tutors and their tutees.I convene a weekly series of stimulating lectures from external speakers for U6 students. These cover issues in current affairs, ethical questions, careers and aspects of citizenship, and personal, social, health, and economic education.Recently I have designed, piloted and rolled out the Third Form Project, an in-house research skills course and independent dissertation for all students in Yr 9. I established the Stephen Hawking Society in September 2005 to provide an annual series of 5 extra-curricular, high quality lectures on different disciplines in the sciences.
