• Investigated the function of the urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA)/urokinase receptor (uPAR) system for the development and progression of atherosclerosis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and diabetes using uPAR knock-out mice and in vitro cell culture approaches. - I revealed that the uPA/uPAR system accelerates the differentiation of monocytes to macrophages mediated by G1 arrest, downregulation of G2/S phase and inhibition of PMA-induced cell death. - I found out that the uPA/uPAR system stimulates triglyceride synthesis in Huh7 hepatoma cells via p38-dependent upregulation of DGAT2. • Planned, implemented and finished four projects successfully with two projects published in international peer-reviewed journals • Supervised one medical student successfully through its project resulting in a publication in peer-reviewed journal • Publication of one book chapter in the book Role of Proteases in Cellular Dysfunction, Advances in Biochemistry in Health and Disease • Oral and poster presentations at international conferences • Closely worked together with colleagues resulting in two publications in peer-reviewed international journals Show less

• Using an in vitro 2-D model of prostate cancer cells I revealed that cancer associated fibroblasts (CAFs) change the cell microenvironment in a way which helps cancer progression while normal associated fibroblasts (NAFs) act in a cancer-inhibiting fashion through the differential release of IL-6 or TNFalpha.

Investigated the regulation of TNFR1 in cells infected with Chlamydia trachomatis and its role in maintaining a successful infection. I could show that C. trachomatis down regulated TNFR1 on the surface thereby circumventing the actions of the host cell's immune system.
