I have had the honour to act as a mentor to Dr Muhammad Arslan over the past 2 years. In that time I have found him to be an extremelv kind, honest and hardworking person. He is extremely knowledgeable about environmental science and is always continuing to extend his knowledge through research, field application and personal development. He is eager to share knowledge and help others expand their abilities and he represents good leadership through good listening and communication, patience and a willingness to be a part of a team. In my many years working in the environmental field including research and development, I have made it a mandate to rely on and utilize proper science. Dr Aslan also follows this same mandate and as such we have developed a good association and friendship.

Mr. Muhammad Arslan is a hard working and ambitious person. I taught him a graduate course in GIS when he was doing his master’s degree at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals. He has excellent research capabilities and delivers work on time. He maintains good rapport with his colleagues and faculty. I wish him all the best. Regards, Dr. Baqer Al-Ramadan, Chairman, Architectural Engineering Department, King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.

As a Wetland Scientist at Keefer Ecological Services, I contribute to projects focused on wetland ecosystem restoration and functionality enhancement, while employing evidence-based practices and modern EIA tools. Additionally, I have been involved in developing wetland conservation and surface water management policies for First Nations in British Columbia, Canada, aligning with nature-based solutions and SDGs. My work supports sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and the preservation of critical ecosystems. Show less

Efforts to address the reclamation and toxicity of oil sands process water are ongoing, but its persistent constituents, such as naphthenic acids, pose significant challenges to remediation. Currently, my work involves three specific projects:- Investigating the effectiveness of reclamation materials, like Kearl Soils, as substrates in fixed bed biofilters for treating oil sands process water.- Conducting a Demonstration pit lake project to assess the viability of permanent aquatic storage structures for establishing self-sustaining ecosystems.- Evaluating the performance of constructed floating wetlands designed for municipal wastewater treatment in cold climates. During my doctoral studies at the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research, under the guidance of Dr. Jochen A Mueller and Prof. Rolf Altenburger, I conducted research aimed at investigating the impact of antimicrobial exposure on wetland performance specifically in the context of host-microbiome interaction. As a result of the research, a term called "in planta dysbiosis" was introduced, drawing parallels between the findings of decreased wetland performance due to antimicrobial exposure and dysbiotic conditions observed in the animal kingdom. The term "in planta dysbiosis" describes a similar phenomenon, wherein disruptions in the natural microbial balance within plants can have significant implications for the health and functioning of the host organisms.
