In my time as a research coordinator, I managed two major studies, resulting in numerous publications. One of the studies investigated cognitive behavioural therapy in improving adherence to CPAP treatment in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. The other study investigated whether modafinil (modavigil) could improve daytime impairments in patients with mild-moderate sleep apnea who could not use CPAP treatment.

We are growing team of clinicians who understand the diversity of problems that affect people’s sleep and are up to date in the latest research. Against the background of establishing Australia’s largest comprehensive sleep disorders service at the Woolcock Clinic in Glebe (with over 25 clinicians and 14 beds for sleep investigation), we recognise the need for closer outreach to patients in the CBD and other areas as an integrated service. Our new approach will allow prompt assessment and management of sleep problems close to people’s work and home. Future plans will include telemedicine as well as direct rural services. Our philosophy is simple. We believe that sleep disorders are often complex problems that require the care of a specialist who understands the diversity of the field.

We are testing the efficacy of a novel sleep intervention in improving the sleep of first time mothers during the postpartum period. Participants attend the program during their third trimester. We would also like to determine whether improved sleep management can reduce one’s risk of postnatal depression. The sleep program offers information about foetal sleep, infant sleep patterns and cycles, settling strategies, strategies to help sleep onset after night waking for the baby as well as how to re-develop healthy sleep patterns later down the track.
