Abstract Architecture is a dynamic and developing professional field. In other words, the provision of architectural services is growing, being more diverse, and becoming more and more complicated in accordance with or following the technological development, globalization, the social change, the customer requirements and the environmental issues. Architects must be able to professionally respond to all these new challenges, the fact which can only be ensured through high-level qualifications. The above-stated points have led to discussions concerning the aspects related to the fundamental requirements of architects in regard with the granting of authorizations permitting them to practice in several countries. This research analyzes the structure, planning and organization of every phase required for the qualification of architects in regard with the practice of the profession. These phases extend from the period of choice of studies in architecture to the inscription on the table of architects. The method used in this research is the Benchmark. That is comparing the results of our empirical research with models developed during the research period and used by some leading countries in the domain. Our proposal consists of a new five-stage-based qualification system for architects in Algeria with the definition of the duration, structure and content of each phase, as well as the transition between each phase which must be constructive and structured.
