My PhD is entitled “Poor Citizens: Social Security and the Unemployed 1979 – 2015”. It is socio-legal thesis which traces the increasing conditionality in the British social security system through the theoretical lens of social citizenship and legal contractualism in western welfare states. It attempts to place the rapidly changing legislative landscape in its social and political context, exploring the influence of developing political ideologies on the construction of social security law. There is a particular focus on areas of political and legal interface in an attempt to understand the ongoing tension between the law making role of government and the adjudication responsibility of the judiciary.
