This role has involved undertaking clinical, academic and research components stipulated by the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) and the Division of Clinical Psychology (DCP) to become a qualified clinical psychologist. This includes: - Academic work: essays; reflective reports; and presentations relating to the dissemination of psychology theory and practice within a clinical psychology context. - Clinical work: four core placements in Adult, Older Adult, Child, and Intellectual Development Disabilities (IDD); working both on an individual basis with clients and in a systemic way with families, carers and staff teams; experience of a variety of therapy modalities (CBT, behavioural, systemic, short-term dynamic therapy, and CAT); each placement required a case study to reflect the clinical work undertaken. - Research work: conducting a systematic literature review; preparing a doctoral thesis; preparing a journal paper for submission to a peer-reviewed journal; conducting audits and service evaluations.

Working as an Assistant Psychologist in a locked rehabilitation service for adults with learning disabilities. For the first 3 months of this role, I also got the opportunity to work in the more general locked rehabilitation service for men with mental health problems whilst the service for adults with learning disabilities was being built. The role involved: - 1:1 clinical work: Under supervision I worked with men who presented with a number of difficulties including challenging behaviour, anger, anxiety, depression, psychosis, and antisocial personality disorder. This work was predominantly informed by Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), with further adaptations of the standard material required for a learning disability populations. - Risk assessment: Assessment of risk was completed on an ongoing basis within the service, as many of the clients had a past forensic history. Risk assessments were completed using an idiosyncratic tool designed by Cambian that required me to coordinate and work with the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) to establish a consensus of the client's risk across several different domains. It was then my responsibility to summarise the collated risk assessment data in a report for dissemination to other staff at Cambian working with clients, as well as to the Client's Care Coordinators and other stakeholders. - Group work: I developed and co-facilitated a number of groups with other MDT colleagues, including a self-esteem group and a health and well-being group. - Attending CPA meetings/report writing: All clients at Cambian Cedars were under a Care Programme Approach (CPA), and thus required regular CPA meetings to review their care. I was responsible for writing CPA reports and for attending CPA meetings to feedback on client's health and wellbeing and making recommendations of future plans for care.

My post was split between the older adult mental service, and the neuropsychology service; these services have since combined under a new directorate within the trust. My main responsibilities were:- Neuropsychological assessment/report writing: I undertook neuropsychological assessments using a broad battery of tests, both with adults with traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) and with older adults with suspected onset dementia. I disseminated the findings of these assessments via clinical reports.- 1:1 clinical work: Primarily, I worked with older adults on a 1:1 basis around issues of bereavement, depression and anxiety. Within the neuropsychology service, my 1:1 clinical work involved facilitating cognitive rehabilitation interventions which I had designed in conjunction with my supervisor.- Group work: I helped to co-facilitate an activities group on a stroke rehabilitation ward based around the principles of behavioural activation.- Service auditing: I was involved in auditing the nature and purpose of of referrals to the service for psychological input around bariatric surgery. This auditing process was later to inform a service level agreement (SLA) around the provision of clinical psychology within this context.

As an Assistant Psychologist within a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), my duties included:Assessments: I was responsible for undertaking observational assessments of children at school. This involved structured observations, semi-structured interviews with the teaching staff supporting the child, and reviewing school reports and documentation relating to the child's performance and conduct at school. I then had to disseminate this information in a report to Clinical Psychologists and other MDT staff working with the child to inform their formulations and interventions.1:1 clinical work: Under the supervision of a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, I was responsible for undertaking 1:1 clinical work with children presenting with a number of problems including anger, anxiety, challenging behaviour and neurodevelopmental disorders.Facilitating groups: I had the opportunity to co-facilitate a Positive Parenting Program group ('Triple P'). Using core behavioural principles of reinforcement and punishment, these groups had elements of both psychoeducation and skills building, and aimed to enhance core parenting skills to prevent children of identified families developing mental health problems.

As an Assistant Psychologist within a community mental health service for older adults, my main responsibilities were: - 1:1 individual therapy: I worked with a number of clients who were experiencing a number of issues such as anxiety, depression, bereavement, adjustment to life changes etc. This involved using person-centred approaches and CBT. - Group Work: In conjunction with a trainee clinical psychologist, I facilitated an anxiety and depression group for older adults attending a day-care centre. This was predominantly psychoeducational based and underpinned by CBT. - Consultation: I offered consultation to care staff at the day-care centre to improve their psychological knowledge and understanding of client's presentations, particularly around dementia and challenging behaviour. - Assessment and Report Writing: I undertook neuropsychological assessments of older adults with suspected onset dementia and documented the findings of these assessments in reports.
