I have worked with Doug for several years in my role as faculty advisor to the Southern Virginia University student run magazine. As such, Doug has proven himself repeatedly as an outstanding leader, writer and technician in all the various aspects of magazine/newspaper production. He came on staff first as a reporter and quickly established himself as a talented writer who was looking for ways to learn and improve his already significant skills. When the magazine needed someone to help with layout, he saved the day with his technical and artistic expertise. Finally, when the magazine needed a strong Editor, Doug was there, making the magazine better, growing the staff and encouraging everyone to contribute their best. Because of this, I am happy to have the chance to recommend him to anyone looking for someone with talents in writing, layout design or leadership and would be glad to talk with you on his behalf.

Circumventing the traditional publishers by preference, I established a small independent press specializing in speculative fiction in order to develop and direct my own publishing ventures. As such all creative decision making rest on my shoulders, as do a wealth of business decisions to support and promote the craft. From the writing, production, marketing, and more, I get to have my hands in many pies as I develop a range of complimentary skills. Returning to Paradigm, I stepped into a full-time mentor position for grades 9-12. While designing and teaching my own elective course on topics like creative writing and the dual natures of humanity), I taught the school's core seminar classes combining subjects like English, Literature, History, Grammar, Etc. I shadowed a team responsible for developing a new branch of digital journalism meant to report on a national scope. Along with supporting the team generally, my responsibilities focused on learning and developing strategies to further audience engagement and promote audience outreach. As Paradigm incorporated a more rigorous core curriculum, I assisted with the development and implementation of a reading program to encourage student engagement with their texts. I mentored approximately 180 students as I developed lesson plans, led classroom instruction, tracked individual progress, and sought out opportunities to work one-on-one with students. Nearing the end of my undergraduate studies, and having ensured a smooth and sustainable staff rotation which would carry the paper forward beyond my years, I again returned to the capacity of a writer and photographer for my final semester.

To help facilitate a smoother transition for the news magazine after my graduation, I stepped down my position as editor-in-chief to assist my replacement. While I continued to assist in many of the roles I'd before contributed to, I focused my greatest energies in handling the visual compilation of all incoming content, as well as the printing and distribution of the final product. During this period, we saw our audience expanding not only on campus but into the local community as well.

    • Editor-In-Chief
      • Aug 2011 - Apr 2012

Stepping quite unexpectedly and suddenly into such a demanding role, I was required to wear many hats as I assessed and met the needs of both my staff members as well as the news magazine. I was tasked with recruiting and training a new staff, a complete restructuring of the magazine's infrastructure, directing content & financial affairs, as well as screening quality. For two semesters, it was necessary for me to fill in wherever there was a staff deficiency. Despite the steep learning curve, in the two semesters I acted as editor I was able to restore the news magazine to a self-sustaining student collaboration in which I participated in supportive roles until graduation. As a writer & photographer for the campus news magazine, I sought out newsworthy stories and photographed events and activities on campus. I worked on a deadline while frequently conducting research and interviews while becoming more familiar with the workings of a small newspaper.
