Working with Doug at Mighty Canary has been such a pleasure. Doug is a go-getter, always up for a challenge, and always willing to jump into new things. He is very encouraging and uplifting to work with. He is also very creative, curious and eager to learn. As a product developer, Doug does a great job of listening to the users, balancing their input against the business objectives, and working with the developers to understand where the associated technology challenges lie. As we have worked on developing our product, he has not been satisfied with superficial solutions to the users’ pain points. Rather, he prefers to probe more deeply into each pain point to understand its real challenges and work towards more durable and satisfying solutions.

I am so grateful I had the honor of working with Doug at Swivel. He has both managed and mentored me over the past three years, and has contributed greatly to my growth as a designer. He embodies compassionate design leadership. Doug cares deeply about developing a strong design team and really empowers us as individuals. He cares about the holistic experience—intentionally choosing not to over-index on visual, UX, or any other specialized focus. Doug is the perfect blend of strategic and tactical. He has an intense curiosity and passion for experimentation. He can regularly be found talking to users, trying out new technologies and approaches, and prototyping ideas. He has cultivated a practice for the designers on his team to do the same. It’s rare to have a leader who gives you the latitude and space you need to do great work, but doesn’t lose touch with the details of design. He delivers on time, is very efficient, and also can think outside the box to come up with creative solutions. Doug’s passion and curiosity also make him an excellent cross-functional leader. From the start, he cultivated strong relationships with other departments across virtually all aspects of the business and made himself a vital partner. His thoughtfulness and care have dramatically improved company operations, elevated the design team as a strategic partner, and made the company culture more intentional and collaborative. I would jump at the opportunity to work with him again in the future.

At Mighty Canary, I've had the opportunity to participate in every aspect of the product and the company. This has demanded every skill I've developed to date. From designing the logo to overseeing brand identity. From managing the launch of a CRM to helping cast our go-to-market strategy. I designed, developed, and instrumented our website and wrote most of its copy. I've established product vision, conducted user research, launched and managed ad systems, managed consultants, created and maintained design systems, helped court investors, and - in general - had more fun than one should be paid for. No position has demanded more of me or grown me more.

As I advanced at Swivel, I had the privilege of identifying, recruiting, and managing a remarkable team of designers. I also accepted an opportunity to manage the daily operations of the off-shore development team which drastically grew my respect and understanding of the development process. For a season, I also acted as the product management lead for our core platform product.

Swivel afforded me an opportunity I'd always wanted - to build product design from scratch. I worked with some brilliant founders and stakeholders to shift the product team toward a more design-centric approach. I created and maintained a design system and worked with developers to improve consistency through component-based implementation. I designed, implemented, and instrumented the website.

At Spiceworks, I learned to understand high-level business objectives and how to tie them back to empathetic user-focused solutions. There, I worked with the VP of product and product team leads to take ideas from whiteboards and wireframes to pixel-perfect prototypes. I conducted user research with a passionate userbase. I learned agile methodology and worked directly with developers to shepherd designs to working code. I led our weekly UX meetings.

My role as a product marketer allowed me to bridge my proficiencies in marketing with a growing passion for product. In this season, I learned to promote our products, as well as how to optimize, instrument, and measure those promotions. I also led a complete rework of on-demand training resources which eventually led to traveling the country to conduct day-long in-person product boot camps.

I had the incredible opportunity to begin working at Spiceworks in the very early chapters of what would become a great startup success story. I was charged with promoting product releases as well as increasing brand awareness. My proudest accomplishment was creating, writing and producing a series of brand videos that received tens of thousands of views (all shot by me on a hand-held camcorder!).

Onestar initially hired me to be a one-man IT shop. In the course of this role, I had a chance to oversee the build and redesign of the website which led me to request and receive funds to overhaul the foundation's brand. In 2005, I led efforts to quickly design and develop a resource coordination database in response to Hurricane Katrina for which I received a signed commendation from the Governor of Texas.
