I work on a fishing boat that takes passengers offshore for half day and full day fishing trips. I assist the captain readying the boat for trips including bait, equipment, and fuel. Other duties while underway include assisting guests while aboard, assisting the captain with maintenance and other tasks, and periodically monitoring the diesel engines while making way. As a deckhand, I help guests identify their catch and ensure that they are compliant with current fishing regulations. At the end of the day, I am responsible for ensuring the vessel is tidied and secured once back at the dock. Show less

Being a graduate student at the university, I have the opportunity to work on a part-time basis as a student employee. With my extensive knowledge, skills, and experience in the offshore marine industry, I pursued the opportunity to assist the university with marine operations. My responsibilities include conducting routine maintenance of the university's vessels, updating relevant logs, and monitoring the condition of the vessels. I am responsible for conducting any repairs needed for each vessel, ensuring relevant safety equipment is available and in working order per university and USCG requirements, and assist with logistics for scheduled operations. I am required to test run the university's uninspected vessels ensuring they are in good working order for students and faculty to utilize during for their research. Having my USCG Operator of Uninspeceted Passenger Vessel (OUPV) merchant mariner credential, reassures the university of my ability to test run the smaller vessels when required. Show less

I worked in the geophysical industry conducting offshore seismic surveys on various research vessels located worldwide. My responsibilities included ensuring departmental requirements were carried out in an efficient manner per assigned shift, executing recording operations according to specifications, maintenance and retrieval of in-water equipment, logging of shipboard and production activities, and maintaining a high level of safety to ensure a safe working environment for my department and on the vessel. I worked with various software systems including systems specific to the marine seismic. Having completed industry specific training in seismic solid streamer repair, I was one of two personnel on my assigned vessel with the ability to repair the solid streamer recording equipment while offshore. Having this skill enabled our vessel to maintain production with a full compliment of seismic recording equipment without unnecessary downtime. The training allowed our crew to maximize production and extend the longevity of the streamers while in operation. Show less
