I've know Doreen for ten years and in her capacity as the Coordinator of the Indigenous Independent Digital Filmmaking (IIDF)program at Capilano University in North Vancouver. After graduating from this program, Doreen understood what the IIDF program needed to grow and thrive. She applied herself and she has nurtured the IIDF into the most successful degree program for Indigenous film students on the continent. In addition to this dedicated work, Doreen also completed her MFA in Film Production at the University of BC, and she continues to produce excellent films on important and timely subjects. And the fall Doreen was appointed to the role of the Director of the BOSA Centre for Film and Animation at Cap U. Frankly, I'm astonished at her energy and productivity, and proud to call her a colleague!

Doreen has been an inspirational leader in the five years I have known and worked with her at Capilano University. She has dedicated her life and work to advancing the education and skills of Indigenous Peoples at our university, in the wider community and throughout Canada and the world. She is a talented storyteller, filmmaker and teacher who is fearless in both her art and activism. She also shows great compassion for those who are struggling and embodies the idea that Education Is Medicine. Doreen comes from a family of truth speakers and honours them by speaking truth to power with passion and commitment. It's been an honour for me to learn so much from her, and I look forward to continuing to do so. In my Māori culture, she would be seen as a Wahine Toa / Warrior Woman.
