Examine applications, plans, and documents and interview persons to determine eligibility for building permits. Review and interpret blueprints, site layouts, and specifications to ensure compliance to International, State and Local Code requirements. Analyze information and data to apply a practical knowledge of the laws, concepts, practices and enforcement methods and techniques in order to independently perform duties typically encountered in Code enforcement. Inspect installation of foundations, framing, plumbing, electrical, sewers, heating systems, and the buildings thermal envelope, during and after construction for structural safety, quality and conformance to laws and regulations. Interpret and explain laws and regulations to the public, property owners, contractors, and design professionals. Perform property maintenance inspections of buildings, property and equipment to evaluate for damage caused by fire, water, exposure to the elements, vandalism, neglect, etc. Interview witnesses to determine cause of damage/neglect. maintain contact with a network of state and local enforcement agencies, and private citizens, to ensure continuity of code enforcement work and to carry out enforcement responsibilities. Effectively deal with individuals and the public in a courteous and tactful manner to develop positive public relations, especially during the Towns annual community outreach program. Issue violation letters and court action to obtain compliance with State and local laws. Prepare cases and appear as a professional witness in court. Prepare documents that deal with the collection of evidence, presentation of testimony, and the retention of informational materials concerning actions encountered during investigations. Maintain daily logs and supplement inspection records. Use a variety of Code enforcement databases and information retrieval systems, such as IPS, Everest, GIS, State and county environmental and historical websites. Show less
