Founder and Executive Director of SCOPE International
-
Feb 2009 - Present
SCOPE International began operations in Kenya in 2009. SCOPE Kenya is now in operation at 48 schools. SCOPE assists school communities in establishing libraries, teaching students practical and entrepreneurial skills, providing leadership opportunities, and trains community workers on appropriate technologies. SCOPE addresses issues of poverty, food security, and is establishing community health workers at schools to organize a community led health initiatives. SCOPE provides workshops to train students and community members on high-yield organic farming methods for creating gardens at school and home. It provides low interest start-up loans and business mentors to family groups seeking business opportunities. Sustainability is addressed by having a cadre of community appointed SCOPE workers at every school community and making a three year commitment to provide assistance through regional coordinators and expert trainers. The model created is being tested prior to introduction in other parts of Kenya and in other countries of the world. Show less

International Service
-
2003 - Present
I was designated International Service Chair of Arvada Sunrise Rotary Club in 2002 and since then my life has changed. My wife and I went to Kenya on Safari and stayed to look for a water project. We went to a Masai village south of Nairobi and saw people on the road begging for water and a group of 30 Masai women waiting for the water truck that was part of our convoy. The women, after celebrating the arrival of water, carried as many as three 40 lb jerrycans across the desert to their homes. That village became the first of many Rotary water projects that I facilitated in Kenya and Uganda. Three years ago we Started SCOPE, a community development initiative based on self empowerment. My co-chair, Carol Carper, and I are both working in Africa. We were able to raise awareness of the extreme conditions in East Africa and learn about problems all over the world. We helped District members develop grants and worked with other committees to instill the spirit of "service above self" in all of the work that we do. My role as a Board member is evolving. I was attracted to the work the Global Health Network does with schools. Since SCOPE deals with more than 50 impoverished rural schools in Kenya, I thought that I could share my experiences and learn from others. My role as a Board member is evolving. I represented the Arvada Sunrise Rotary Club in joining with other service organizations in Arvada and adjoining Wheat Ridge to provide college scholarships to students that have overcome adversity in their life. AWRSAY demonstrates the power of working together for worthy cause.
