      * Provided unique perspective and insights for students in a variety of courses designed to help them prepare for careers in journalism or other communication fields. * Through personal experiences as a journalist, I was able to bring unique guest speakers into my classes, including former Gov. Dave Heineman, former NASA communications director Jen Rae Wang along with a variety of working reporters who shared their own insights and perspectives on today’s journalism environment. * Partnered with community organizations and local K-12 school classes using Service Learning initiatives as learning tools. * Through my own experiences as a local and national award-winning reporter and photographer I was able to give students first-hand examples to augment various lessons, giving specific insights of different situations. * Volunteered to serve on various committees at the university, representing the School of Communication as well as the College of Communication, Fine Arts and Media. * Developed and taught a new course aimed at the growing interest in sports reporting and sports coverage through a variety of reporting platforms, aimed to attract and continue student interest. * Shared insight learned as a reporter through the years working various beats to build relationships with key officials and leaders in communities so that when a news story needed to be covered the sources might think of me before the competition. I taught students the importance of that skill and how to use it. Show less

Years of experience as a journalist and as a political reporter gave me insight as to how to frame questions on issues that were important and how to pull political candidates back into a topic during an interview when they were trying to change the subject. Also, knowledge of the area allowed me to focus newscasts on specific topics that I knew would interest listeners. Provided unique perspective and insights for students in a variety of courses designed to help them prepare for careers in journalism or other communication fields. However, this was a unique opportunity and challenge personally with the college without a faculty member for the Spring Semester 2011 and near financial disaster. The situation allowed me the classroom and preparation experience that I would not otherwise have had.
