I had a strong desire to gain practical skills and life led to me this position. I found myself fully absorbed in the country life where I assist gamekeeper on daily basis. I help with and continuously learn about rearing game birds, pen maintenance and woodland management. I look after and train working dogs. I beat on shoot days and help with the processing of game meat. I learn to control vermin and invasive species like grey squirrels and rats. I worked in ecological consultancy, as a part of a team to complete various protected species surveys such as bat, reptile and great crested newt surveys. I specialised into ancient woodland surveys, which included in-field surveys aimed to locate ancient woodland indicator species. I designed mitigation for development projects and controlled risks to wildlife during development in role of Ecological Clerk of Works. I also liaise with clients and subcontractors, where we were finding practical solutions for clients while complying with ecological needs. Show less

I gained a good insight into a work of countryside ranger and loved what I was doing. I gained practice in site checking of nature reserves, maintenance of public access to nature reserves, reptile population and translocation surveys, assisting activities in Forest School, preparations for volunteer tasks, removal of invasive species (Himalayan balsam) and monitoring on riparian invasive species (American mink). I have very much enjoyed working as part of New Forest Non-Native Species Project. In a team of two, we surveyed invasive and native plants along the river courses, analysed data and wrote a report on distribution of invasive plants in New Forest. We were awarded the amateur naturalists Peter Brough Award for our work. I have very much enjoyed working as part of New Forest Non-Native Species Project.
