MEng Chemical Engineering with Business Management
-
Sep 2011 - Jul 2015
Upper second class (2.1) Hons Whilst studying Chemical Engineering with Business Management at University I developed and refined many transferrable skills: • I showed team-working skills throughout the 3rd year design project. Demonstrating success through gaining above average marks based on my team-mates opinion. • I practically applied theory to a situation to solve a problem and design a sensor that unobtrusively measured a humans breathing rate for my dissertation. • I regularly had to utilise my decision-making skills and innovation to solve complex problems. • Strong data analysis and report writing, alongside practical skills were essential to completing lab projects efficiently and to a high standard. • I learnt and applied business skills through writing reports based upon business strategy, enterprise and marketing. Whilst studying I was also an active member of the University of Manchester Mens Football Club. I held two positions; 4th Team Captain (2013/14) and Vice Club Captain (2014/15). Both positions required leadership, responsibility and clear communication to coordinate training sessions and organise team selection.

My primary role was to assess and distinguish areas for process improvement to a specific sector of the manufacturing procedure. This involved fully understanding the operation at hand and tracking the movement of operators and machines simultaneously to help determine the losses. It was key to form a good relationship with the operators to help obtain insight into the process and gain their trust when applying new ideas to speed up the process. Through the 10 week internship I identified a 34% saving which when executed will generate a $40,000 cash saving. To ensure the process improvements I identified are carried out fully, I worked with the operators and full-time engineers to develop a realistic plan which will achieve the savings. The project required interpersonal, communication and organisational skills as well as training and persuading operators to modify the way they work to maximise the saving opportunities. A sub-project I undertook involved looking into the viability of implementing a new operating system. This required identifying the economic savings that would be seen if implemented; understanding the new technology involved; and working with multiple departments and outside companies to determine the feasibility and functionality of using this new system.

Owner of a daily management system which was analysed every morning regarding the daily cleaning and maintenance across the whole manufacturing process. Had to work with the operators to co-operate and complete the daily tasks. When completed properly, the management system will identify minor defects before they become major problems and cause downtime. Updating the tasks to identify the problems early throughout the running of the plant and in turn reduce the downtime caused through in-completion of tasks.
