Youth & Community Practitioner

Nov 2013 - Mar 2014
During my placement at The Urban Academy Educational Centre (TUA) I undertook the role of Support Worker and Workshop Facilitator. Essentially my main responsibilities were to provide practical and emotional support through developing a stable and safe environment which enabled the students to vocalise their thoughts, experiences, issues and personal needs. In order to identify and meet their needs I provided one to one (1:1) key working sessions both on site and via client home visits. I also facilitated staff in the delivery of educational lessons as well as designing and managing my own empowering weekly workshop. Another intervention which I developed was the role of an ‘Internal Key-Worker’. This was carried out as I made myself accessible within a communal space to support students on an adhoc basis when they need to speak to someone. This role developed organically as students would seek me out throughout the day to discuss their work or problems with me. I believe that my calm approach made me accessible to the young people as I expressed empathy whilst still demonstrating a level of understanding of young person’s practical and emotional needs. I worked with young people in groups and on a one to one basis discussing issues of identity; using my abilities to think outside the box helped when facilitating and participating in insightful, philosophical meaningful and spiritual discussions about identity and the image of self.Identifying the need of the young person and developing intervention projects Planning and facilitating of student sessions (woman’s group work, paths to life, critical thinking, vocal training and positive experiences weekly sessions) Conducting home visits for the centers young people( internal/external)Planning and running of student group discussionsWorking and supporting ex/current gang affiliated students and/or hard to reach groups
