Following the environmental and human catastrophe resulting from the collapse of a tailings dam in Brazil in January 2019, I'm supporting ICMM's role as a co-convenor of the Global Tailings Review. The review will establish an international standard for the safe management of tailings storage facilities.I currently lead two working groups that consist mainly of geotechnical/processing engineers and environmental specialists to deliver work on:- Establishing guidance and best practices on tailings management- Fostering innovation and adoption of technologies for the reduction of tailings and management of tailings facilities- Strengthening the capacity of those who manage tailingsPreviously, I led and supported various socio-economic projects that delivered a research report on social precinct in mining-dependent countries, a research paper that identifies the drivers and barriers for creating local economic opportunities around mine operations, and co-convened SDGs-related events with key stakeholders, including UNDP, IFC, and CCSI.I support the CEO to establish new relationships with Chinese mining companies and associations. Cemented relationship with CCCMC, a mining association under the Ministry of Commerce, leading to the signing of an MoU, which involves co-organizing trainings for Chinese mining companies operating overseas.
