As an Employment coach, I advise clients on potential career routes based on identified values, interests and goals. I assist them in the development of individualized career action plans – focusing on needs, abilities, transferable skills and goals. Developing resumes, cover letters, mock interviews, one-on-one employment counselling and second career applications are my main focus. Facilitating workshops is another major part of this role; these workshops are to build participants’ knowledge and awareness about Canadian culture, and Employer expectations. As a settlement worker I help clients navigate all kinds of systems: health, legal, children services, social assistance, regulated professions, housing, employment, shelters, and mental health, among others. Accompanying clients to appointments with doctors, social workers or lawyers to support with interpretation and translation, from Spanish to English is another major part of my role. I provide clients information about their rights and responsibilities in Canada and refer them to appropriate places depending on their needs. I assist newcomers with immigration applications, such as permanent residence, citizenship, and sponsorship. I also help people apply for health cards, SINs, child tax benefit, social services etc.
