  Chelsea, Massachusetts, is a majority immigrant and low-income city across the river from Boston, and I am working on clean energy projects there and in East Boston. Energy democracy is the movement to ensure public participation in the clean energy transition. Our goal is to facilitate an equitable transition away from fossil fuels and help elevate the voices of the community in the environmental movement and in policy making spaces. We are working with the city of Boston to help people access solar panels, and we are setting up microgrids, which are mini versions of the electric grid in which buildings are connected to local clean energy sources and/or batteries that will function when the larger grid is down. GreenRoots has been a community-based organization in Chelsea for decades and also does projects and advocacy in the areas of climate justice, public health, air quality, land use, public transportation, and housing.
