MSc. Thesis on "Estimation of Reference Evapotranspiration using artificial neural network method and combinations of different climatic variables " 1. In a hydrological cycle, evapotranspiration forms one of the major variables. It has the potential to make a tremendous impact on irrigation and water resource management. 2. Reference evapotranspiration plays a crucial role in water resource planners for proper water resource management and irrigation scheduling. 3. From the past few decades, the approach in determining evapotranspiration has changed from traditional methods like Penman-Monteith (FAO 56 PM), Hargreaves method to data-driven machine learning methods like artificial neural network (ANN), Support vector machine (SVM), Particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, Genetic algorithm (GA), etc. 4. This change is due to the unavailability of necessary climatic data at different locations. Machine learning techniques are more in use nowadays because of its fewer input demands. 5. In this study, five ANN models were developed using combinations of five climatic variables (air temperature, humidity, wind speed, slope vapor pressure, and solar radiation) and five ANN architectures with eight, twelve, and sixteen neurons in one hidden layer and ten neurons in two hidden layers. 6. The ANN architecture was selected with eight, twelve, and sixteen neurons in one hidden layer and ten neurons in two hidden layers giving the minimum SEE value of 0.22 mm/day while training. 7. Five statistical indices were used to evaluate the performance of the models i.e., coefficient of determination (R2), Mean square error (MSE), Root means square error (RMSE), relative error (RE), and Standard error of estimation (SEE). 8. The result showed that the best results are obtained from all five climatic variables with air temperature and solar radiation being the most important in estimating accurate ETo value. Show less
