Brown University’s Division of Global Emergency Medicine (GEM) has supported the development of Rwanda’s first emergency medicine specialty training programs in collaboration with the University of Rwanda and the Ministry of Health. As the Carolan Research Fellow, I support research projects and teach research methodology to emergency medicine residents. In addition, I aid in analysis, data collection, and draft manuscript writing on various emergency medicine research projects. Participated in the program as a student intern during my second year at Oregon State where I conducted research through cross cultural communication with locals in Botswana, demonstrated intercultural and nonverbal communication skills to manage language barriers, and focused on empowerment and health education to create opportunities for youth. I returned to Botswana the following year as a teaching assistant where I gained composition skills while writing community assessment reports and community profile, assisted in travel preparations and lessons of cultural immersion for student interns, spoke publicly to various university leaders to promote the program, and assisted in writing IRB proposals as well as other written funding proposals.
